Well into Day 5 here now on the Indian Ocean, morale is excellent, everyone is feeling good. We were by now expecting to have hit a big storm with 30 knot winds on the nose which we would not have been able to row against. This would have meant we would have needed to deploy our para-anchor ( a kind of underwater parachute that stops you being blown backwards so much) and hunkered down in the cabins for all that time, which would have been miserable! Imagine our delight when we got a call from the weather router to say that the front had been pushed out of the way! We’re still going to experience some winds and we’re going to get pretty wet, and it will be slow going, but we should be able to row against it and make at least some progress…once through the winds swing round in our favour and we should be able to make up for lost time!
Barry is starting to suffer with the obligatory sore bum that ocean rowers experience from pressure and salt sores building up on the bum – or pizza arse as it is fondly known. It makes the rowing unpleasant but can be managed with painkillers and some items from the onboard medical kit.
James and Barry were very excited to hear that England had gotten through to the next round of the world cup….although they can’t quite believe that there is a possibility that they’re managing to miss the hottest summer in the UK in years and a potential world cup final with England in it!!
It’s been a tough days rowing so I’ll end this blog short, only to add that Robin’s karaoke style singing has continued, he belts out his favourites with absolutely no regard for the happiness of his crew mates. Please send help. #prayforRobin
